Protest over illegal food court

GEORGE TOWN: About 80 flat dwellers in Jalan Aziz Ibrahim in Sungai Nibong held a peaceful demonstration against the Penang Municipal Council for allowing an illegal food court to operate near their homes.

Residents association committee member Muhammad Hamuzira Muhammad said yesterday they were unhappy over the lack of response from the council.

“The food court with 48 stalls is a nuisance. There is noise pollution, littering and traffic congestion.

“The developer claimed it did not allow for any food court although the site had been handed over to the council for management,” he said.

Muhammad Hamuzira added that the residents threatened to hold a bigger demonstration if the council did not resolve the matter in one week.

It is learnt the food court is being occupied by hawkers who had been operating near the Bayan Baru roundabout. That site was closed down last year.

State Traffic Management and Local Government committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow said he would direct the council to investigate the matter.

In Sik, Penang Umno chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi suggested the formation of a commission to study the impact of a Pakatan Rakyat state government helmed by the DAP.

“The DAP is quick to hurl accusations at the Federal Government, calling for a commission and a White Paper.

“Now we are calling for a white paper or a royal commission to study its weaknesses,” he said at a press conference when asked to comment on the crisis between DAP and the PKR.

Ahmad Zahid, who is also Defence Minister, admitted that Barisan had made mistakes and paid a heavy price in the last general election.
